Advisory Board

One of the unique strengths MSI brings to the Brownfields business is the expertise in finance, real estate, environmental and political affairs provided by the company’s Advisory Board.  The Advisory Board members provide guidance to the company with respect to business strategy and acquisition decisions.  All acquisitions are screened by the Board prior to submittal to our investors.  The Advisory Board Members are:

Michael E. Rossi. Mr. Rossi is a retired vice chairman of BankAmerica Corporation. He was appointed to vice chairman in 1993 and served until 1997. Prior to serving as vice chairman, Mr. Rossi was BankAmerica's chief credit officer. Prior to that post, he held various executive positions which included running the Bank's Commercial Banking Division and the Domestic Private Banking Division, the Asia Division, Real Estate division, and the Latin America Division. He also served as senior credit officer of the World Banking Group. Mr. Rossi currently serves as Chairman and Executive Officer of Aozora Bank, Ltd. in Tokyo and as an advisor to a major New York hedge fund. 

Mr. Rossi is a member of the board of the National Urban League, Del Webb Corporation, Pipevine, Shorenstien Company, The Monterrey Institute of International Studies, and Special Olympics of Northern California. He was formerly a member of the board of Union Pacific Resources, the American Bankers Association, Claremont University Center and Graduate School , the American Graduate School of International Management, the San Francisco Opera, and the University of California at Berkeley Art Museum . He also served on the President's Campaign Cabinet for University of California at Berkeley and was a member of the nominating Committee of the Bankers Association for Foreign Trade (BAFT) as well as past president of the board of BAFT.

Gary H. Hunt, Managing Director. Mr. Hunt is a partner of California Strategies, a government relations strategic planning and consulting firm, where he serves as the senior advisor to several major corporations and developers on acquisitions and Brownfield sites. Previously, Mr. Hunt served as Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs of the Irvine Company.

Mr. Hunt has held numerous appointed positions in state and federal government, including to the Joint Committee on Higher Education, California Legislature; Administrative Assistant to the Chairman of the Republican Caucus for the State Assembly; Legislative Assistant to former United States Congressman Clair W. Burgener; and Executive Director of the California Republican Party. In 1980, he served as Deputy Director of the Republican National Convention, and then as Group Vice Chairman of the Presidential Inaugural Committee to celebrate the first inauguration of President Ronald Reagan. In 1996, California Governor Pete Wilson appointed Mr. Hunt to the California Constitution Revision Commission and to the State's Hoover Commission. In 1999, Governor Gray Davis appointed him to serve on his Commission on Infrastructure, Building the 21st Century. Mr. Hunt attended the University of Cincinnati and Sacramento State University , and holds a Juris Doctorate from Irvine University School of Law.

Winston H. Hickox. Former Cal/EPA Secretary Hickox is currently an appointee at California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) where he is assisting with the implementation of the systems Environmental Initiatives. Mr. Hickox served as Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency, a member of the Governors Cabinet, from January 1999 to November 2003. Mr. Hickox has spent roughly half his career in government and half in the private sector in the real estate investment management field. Secretary Hickox previously served for 7 years as Special Assistant to the Governor Jerry Brown and as the Deputy Secretary for Environmental Affairs. In addition to this government service Mr. Hickox also worked for the Departments of Agriculture, Mental Hygiene, Finance, Social Welfare, Health Care Services (MediCal), and Health Services. 

In the private sector, Secretary Hickox was a Managing Director for La Salle Advisors Limited. Part of his responsibilities included management of a large real estate investment portfolio for the California Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). Earlier in his business career he operated his own real estate investment management business, Hickox Financial Corp.

Mr. Hickox is a member of the Board of the California League of Conservation Voters and, from 1990 to 1994, served as President. The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors recently appointed him to the Board of the $4 billion Sacramento County Employees’ Retirement System (SCERS). Finally, he is an alternate to the California Coastal Commission.

John “Rusty” Areias. Mr. Areias is a partner of California Strategies, a government relations strategic planning and consulting firm, which focuses on working with senior executives on major, long-term business and public policy issues. Prior to joining California Strategies, Mr. Areias served three years as the Director of the California Department of Parks and Recreation, where he cut park fees in half, a move that boosted attendance at state parks by 23 million visitors. Before serving as the Parks Director, Mr. Areias served twelve years in the California State Assembly. While in the Assembly, Mr. Areias, a Democrat, had over 100 bills signed into law by two different Republican governors, demonstrating his ability to bring people together and solve problems. Mr. Areias also served as chairman of the California State Coastal Commission where he protected California 's coastline from overdevelopment and ensured public access to the shoreline. Before his election to the Assembly, Mr. Areias managed the day-to-day operations of a large dairy farm in Los Banos.
